In her first article: The Impact of Environment on Your Health and Wellness, Emma explained how your home should be a sanctuary, a haven of rest and tranquillity, where you feel safe and nurtured.
5 Simple Steps to Create a Sanctuary to Improve your Health and Well-Being
1. Declutter a Small Space
Start by decluttering one small area, such as a countertop, a drawer, or a corner of a room.
Here’s how to go about it:
- Set a timer for 15-30 minutes to declutter. This time limit makes the task less daunting and helps maintain focus.
- Create three piles: keep, donate/sell, and discard. Be honest about what you really need and use.
- Organise the space neatly. Use storage bins, old boxes or drawer organisers to keep things in order.
- Make decluttering a regular habit. Spend a few minutes each day or set aside time weekly to keep your space clutter-free.
- Remove unwanted items from your home sustainably: sell, donate, regift, recycle.
2. Switch to Natural Cleaning Products
Switching to natural cleaning products for you and your home can significantly improve the indoor air quality and reduce exposure to harmful chemicals.
Start by checking the labels of your current cleaning products for chemicals like VOCs, ammonia, bleach, phthalates, formaldehyde and fragrances and identify how many products you have that could be impacting your wellbeing.
Start using natural non toxic products like vinegar, baking soda, natural soaps and essential oils or purchase some amazing ENJO fibres which do the deep cleaning using only water. Slowly start to switch to simple natural ways of cleaning and see your health improve.

Many people have cabinets full of shower gels, shampoos, lotions and potions but try to simplify this down (1 it helps with clutter and 2 it’s just a marketing ploy to make you spend money!)
Look for naturally made products like shampoo bars with coconut oil, herbs and essential oils or using cod liver oil or cocoa butter as a natural moisturiser and skin hydrator.
4. Improve Ventilation
Proper ventilation is crucial for reducing indoor pollutants and maintaining good air quality.
- Tips:
- Open windows daily for at least 10-15 minutes. especially while cooking, cleaning, or after a shower. This helps circulate fresh air and reduce moisture buildup
- Utilise exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens to remove excess moisture and odours. Ensure they are functioning properly and clean them regularly.
- Use air purifiers with HEPA filters if you live in an area with poor outdoor air quality or excessive heat like the UAE. These devices can remove particles like dust, pollen, and pet dander from the air
- Introduce houseplants. Certain houseplants, like spider plants and peace lilies, can help improve air quality by naturally filtering toxins from the air.
5. Foster Positive Interactions
Healthy relationships within the home are essential for emotional wellbeing. Communication is key to any relationship so schedule time for regular family meetings or check-ins to discuss any concerns or issues. Allow everyone to voice their opinions and feelings.
Express gratitude and appreciation for each other regularly. Small gestures, like saying “thank you” or acknowledging someone’s efforts, can really strengthen relationships. Engage in activities that everyone enjoys, such as game nights, cooking together, or going for walks.
Shared experiences build bonds and create positive memories. While spending time together is important, respecting each other’s need for personal space, alone time and privacy is equally crucial for maintaining harmony and a positive mental and emotional wellbeing.
