Sustainfest Workshop: A Journey to Greener Living
We had an incredible experience at the Sustainfest hosted by Tish Tash Mums Club and Times Square Center Dubai during the week of COP28. It was hosted by British broadcaster, retail and consumer expert and champion for sustainable living Kate Hardcastle and was filled with enthusiastic participation and enlightening discoveries.
Our adventure began with a simple question: What cleaning products are we using in our homes? The answers were eye-opening, revealing the excessive use of unnecessary household chemicals.
With many children in attendance, we seized the opportunity to question their understanding of these chemicals and their packaging. Their responses about the afterlife of plastic containers was very impressive.
DIY Magic: Creating Homemade, Eco-Friendly Cleaning Solutions for a Greener Home
The real fun kicked off when we introduced the idea of homemade, eco-friendly cleaning solutions. Equipped with just baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, salt, water, and essential oils, we embarked on creating ‘magic potions’ to replace conventional cleaners. The level of engagement from the participants, especially the younger ones, was nothing short of captivating.
Our first natural cleaning solution combined lemon juice, water, and vinegar, a versatile mix suitable for cleaning everything from fridges to windows and chopping boards. We created a few more cleaning solutions with mixtures like:
Baking soda and vinegar – suitable for freshening kitchen drains, removing carpet stains, and even brightening grout.
An effective blend of salt and water for tackling tasks like scrubbing sinks, removing rust from cast iron skillets, and unclogging drains.Â
A mix of essential oils and water – has a great smell and works as an all-purpose cleaner fit for use throughout the home.
While these homemade solutions require a lot of effort, in some cases a good understanding of chemistry and the use of cloths, they stand out as effective and environmentally friendly alternatives that benefit not only our health and wallets but the planet as well.Â
